Mel Robson
opened the Eastern Suburbs Brewmaker retail outlet in April 1984. It was soon
apparent to him that there was a need in the industry for a shop that catered to
the more serious brewer. The brewer that either made his own brew from malt
extract, fresh hops etc, or the even more serious group who actually did their
own mashing.
Thursday night tastings at Mel's became a popular
venue for these brewers and before long the Eastern Suburbs Brewers Club was
formed. Some of the participants have gone on to be commercial brewers and one
has even created his own brewery in St Peters.
By the late eighties Mel had expanded into
wholesaling, producing his own line of home brew cans in 1.7kg and the 3kg beer
packs. This created a need for more space resulting in another
outlet opening in Peakhurst in southern Sydney. Eastern Suburbs Brewmaker
continued to operate in Randwick as a branch of ESB.
ESB
grew rapidly in the nineties, also becoming a distributor for Coopers. It was
not long before ESB had distributors in each state, three in Queensland, as the
ESB brands grew in popularity.
White Labs yeasts were added to the distribution
portfolio as an alternative to Wyeast. They were instantly popular because of
the ability to pitch without having to make a starter. This site contains all
the White Lab yeasts including their
specifications.
More recent times has seen the appearance of the
fresh Wort kits produced by Matt Donelan of St Peters Brewery. These kits
contain 15 liters of fresh wort from Matt's kettle and come in five different
varieties. Within two years they have become available Australia wide through
the network of ESB distributors. Successes at the brew competitions have become
the norm.
It is the aim of ESB to bring the best malt, hops,
and yeast to the brewer. These are available on the website or from the various
outlets across Australia.
ESB hopes the web
site meets your requirements. If it does not please let us know. The plan is to
continually upgrade as well as introduce new products. Your comments are
welcome.
